State recognised diplomas

The diplomas awarded by the ‘Grandes Ecoles’ of Osteopathy are the first to be recognized by the state

The five schools that make up the ‘Grandes Écoles’ of Osteopathy (CEESO in Paris and Lyon, CIDO Saint Etienne, COP Marseille and the IdHÉO Nantes) have all received accreditation for their diplomas from the Répertoire National des Certifications Professionnelles (RNCP) (National Register of Professional Certifications).

This is the first such group of osteopathy schools to have had its diplomas recognized by the state.

The approach of the ‘Grandes Ecoles’

In view of a legislation that these ‘Grandes Ecoles’ considered to be wholly unsatisfactory, they decided to launch their own campaign and obtain state recognition for the profession. To do this each school put together a complete dossier detailing every aspect of the procedures in place to ensure excellence in its practitioners. From the entry criteria to obtaining the final diploma, every detail was closely scrutinized. What an osteopath does, his skills, knowledge, all the methods of assessing his competence, everything was examined in minute detail. After studying all the documentation provided, the RNCP finally accepted the validity of the diploma on the 8th July 2009, and published their decision on the 21st July. Recognition of this diploma was particularly important to the profession as, until that time, the law only stipulated a minimum number of hours of osteopathic training. Recognizing the quality of the training on offer, the RNCP recognized the diploma as being a grade 2 diploma i.e. one awarded in recognition of a high level qualification implying a high level of professional competence and responsibility. It is today the only document to officially certify the level of a training course. Inclusion of the diploma by the RNCP, the French reference for all qualifications, is the equivalent of a quality label for the diploma, recognizing as it does the professionalism of a course of study now accepted on a national scale.

The CIDO’s Osteopathy Diploma recognised as Grade 1 by the RNCP

Since the ministerial decree of the 25th January 2011, officialised by publication on the 2nd February 2011, the osteopathy diploma D.O. awarded by the Centre International D’Ostéopathie (CIDO) has been recognized by the Répertoire National des Certifications as being a Grade 1 diploma (RNCP Grade 1).

Professional qualification is given in recognition that the holders of the qualification are capable of carrying out certain activities in a variety of situations but with a degree of responsibility for their actions that is clearly defined. The osteopathy diploma awarded by the CIDO has been given a Grade 1 classification, in recognition of its level of quality, and the professional responsibility of its holders, a grade equivalent for that of a holder of a 2-year full-time Master’s degree (Bac + 5 years)

In the future, this could also facilitate the pursuance of further academic study and make it easier for those holding this diploma to work as osteopaths in other European countries where osteopathy is also subject to strict controls.
